A precision beauty device designed for professional-grade brow shaping and maintenance.

Skills

Traditional approaches to eyebrow styling generally take considerable time and multiple products and methods. This is particularly true for individuals with hair loss conditions who use these techniques on a daily basis. ShuBrow is a platform from L'Oreal that uses innovative AR recognition technology and skin safe printing technology to craft precision eyebrow effects in seconds.

I worked with L'Oreal as an independent design engineer to develop the key mechanism for the ShuBrow device. The design brief involved developing a robust mechanism that can accurately and repeatably track distance across a wide range of face morphologies. This project is currently under NDA and only includes old and non-specific assets.

Mechanism Concept Exploration
Mechanism Concept Exploration

The project started with a quick design sprint in which I sketched dozens of concepts for linear distance tracking using mechanical and electrical methods.

I then translated these sketches into simplified block diagrams for clear communication with client stakeholders. As part of this review, I also used pugh matrices to establish clear evaluation criteria and aid in concept downselection.

CAD Development

After generating client buy-in and confidence, I used Solidworks (3D CAD) to develop two leading concepts in parallel using a master modeling process. The initial CAD exploration generated further insight into the concepts, and led to the final selection for the device's mechanical architecture.

Initial Prototyping
Initial Prototyping

I supported alpha prototyping efforts by generating print files and working directly with the 3D printing vendor to select 3D printing resins (SLA), build orientations, and surface parameters to ensure high-quality, functional parts. These prototypes were sent directly to the client for build and test.

Concept Refinement
Concept Refinement

The alpha prototypes provided valuable insights regarding device and mechanism assembly steps as well as dimensional/tolerance considerations for ensuring smooth mechanism operation. Armed with these insights, I led a rapid refinement stage using Solidworks CAD software.

Final prototyping + Testing

Working with the same printing vendor, we reprinted the components for the new mechanical architecture. The resulting beta prototypes featured simpler assembly and significantly improved mechanism operation, which enabled the client to conduct a thorough, multi-user study.
